SriLankan Airlines Flight Attendants

SriLankan Airlines introduced this new uniform in 2010 together with a new menu to lure tourists back to the country following the end of the 25 year civil war with a crashing defeat of the Tamil Tigers.

Beginning the journey with its iconic logo the monara or the peacock , the airline’s front line staff from cabin to ground crew were given a brand new look. The charm, elegance and grace of the peacock was preserved as the hundreds of beautiful stewardesses at SriLankan Airlines underwent a transformation as their country began an  era of peace.

Their iconic Kandyan Saree uniform still retains its oriental charm but yet has a distinctive modern appeal and contemporary look. The new colour palette plays with the soft hues of sea blue splashed with the delicate multi-hued motifs of the peacock feather with its shimmering iridescent bursts of electric orange mottled with dark, light blue and white.

Sky Europe Flight Attendant Uniforms

Sky Europe was a Slovakian Airline that filed for bankruptcy in 2009 after accumulating some debilitating debts. At that time, the airline had been voted the best LCC in Eastern Europe and the third best LCC in Europe. Te Sky Europe Uniform was also voted one of the classiest stewardess uniforms by various travel magazines. According to one online travel journal:
SkyEurope has apparently combined fashion with casual in their uniforms of stylish denim. Denim dresses, skirts and coats pinned with a red flower gives the whole experience a nice, laid-back feel. We just hope they refrain from wearing a jean jacket on top of it when they’re off duty.

Bangkok Airways Flight Attendant Uniforms in 2011

Bangkok Airways launched its new elegant and stylish uniform for a new era at Bangkok International Fashion Week 2011(BIFW2011), Siam Paragon. Bangkok Airways is a 44 year old Thai airline known for its conservative management style and conservative flight attendant look.

Bangkok Airways: Asia's Boutique Airline
According to Bangkok Airways “We are delighted to support Thai designers and also Bangkok International Fashion Week this year. After having seen many successes of Thai designers, we decided to engage Mr. Polpat Asavaprapha, owner of ASAVA and ASV brand, to create a new look since the current uniform has been in use for  almost 20 years. The new collection will be officially launched at BIFW2011.”

“This is very exciting and interesting. The concept of new uniform will emphasize our position as “Boutique Airline” and “Shades of Blue” shows our color identity. The new uniforms, especially designed for 1,200 front line staff in reservation, ground services and in-flight services are not only modern in style but also comfortable to wear” adde the airline during the Bangkok International Fashion Week.

A new elegant and stylish look for Bangkok Airways Flight Attendants
The old Bangkok Airways Flight Attendant uniform with their colorful fish motif had served the airline for 15 years
The designer looked at the carrier's identities and interpreted them into the designs. For example, the aircrafts' blue stripes had him creating stripe patterns in turquoise and cobalt blue. And to express its identity as a leisure airline, he designed the uniform to render a smart casual look.

The designer Mr. Polpat Asavaprapha explained that “Before designing the uniforms, I needed to find what are the identities of Bangkok Airways. Blue stripes painted on the aircraft is one of the carrier’s identities. I then created stripe pattern with shades of blue and turquoise.  Silk-Poly fabric has been chosen to give a feeling of lightness and comfort to the person wearing it. Uniform for men, in grey and blue with painted cobalt stripes on the shirt emphasizes luxury, smart and informal look. This is to express the identity as a leisure airline.”

“To design clothes, apart from consideration of era and time, we also think about staffs who wear the uniform and their work. For flight-attendants who have to be quick and smart, we decided to use culottes, which will look modern and flexible” Mr. Polpat added.

This is definitely one of the best Flight Attendant uniforms that I have seen so far.

Japan Airlines Stewardess Uniforms

Did you know that Japan Airlines has multiple kinds of stewardess uniforms? When Japan Airlines merged with Japan Air System in 2002, it kept 5 of the old airline's uniforms. And Japan Airlines has had such a successful string of sexy stewardess uniforms over the years that Japanese men, well known for the peculiar obsessions, are now collecting the uniforms as fetishes and for use in sexual fantasies. Japanese men have peculiar sexual fantasies; visitors to Tokyo are always shocked to find Japanese men, including older men, casually and comfortably reading comic books on sexual fantasies with underage girls. Without batting an eyelid :) Talk about differences in cultures!

According to a report that emerged last year, the uniforms are reportedly used with "customers keen on role-playing fantasies, while rare specimens that have actually been worn are hugely sought after by fetishists and are worth their weight in gold." A collection of Flight Attendant uniforms once fetched $16,000 in the black market. They are worn by sexual performers in Japan's booming sex industry to satisfy the wild fantasies of men. The trade is booming such that some Japanese airlines have now resorted to sewing computer chips into the uniforms to prevent the stewardess from selling them to the lucrative black market. They have even created departments within  some airlines to enforce the ban on sale of the stewardess uniforms in the black market. Below is a collection of Japan Airlines uniforms which have tormented and aroused Japanese men for decades :)

Controversial: Air New Zealand Flight Attendant Unifrom

Air New Zealand Flight Attendant Uniforms have been christened "drag queen" uniforms and have not always received great reviews from the traveling public and the commentators. Many Air New Zealand staff have also complained that the shocking pink dresses make them look like drag queens :)

The shocking pink colour was chosen to match the colour of the airline livery. Many Air New Zealand are also not quite happy with the spots on the uniforms and how the spots bring out their body size. The length of the dress is also a big issue for the flight attendants. Passengers have already expressed their disgust. Will Air New Zealand undergo a new uniform redesign in less than 10 years? It never seems to get it right when it comes to stewardess uniforms.

The new outfits, which appear to have been inspired by Barbie’s flock wallpaper, were designed by New Zealand fashion designer Trelise Cooper. However, the Air New Zealand Uniform has been faced with a counterclaim and further controversy with New Zealand's indigenous Maori community accusing the airline of disrespecting Maori culture by its misuse of the curly patterns. According to a Maori academic, the patterns on Air New Zealand Stewardess uniform are "obviously been drawn by someone who doesn't appreciate the culture or understand the deeper symbolism,"

Perhaps Air New Zealand can borrow a leaf from the Gulf carriers on elegant cabin crew uniform designs.
